International Peace and Security Interest Group Workshop

The International Peace and Security Interest Group (IPSIG), established in 2014, is one of ANZSIL’s interest groups. The aim of the Group is to enable those ANZSIL members who are interested in conflict, peace and security issues to connect with one another and exchange ideas throughout the year, not just at the annual ANZSIL conference. IPSIG held its inaugural workshop in Melbourne in March 2015 and a second workshop in Sydney in April 2016.

IPSIG Workshop 2017

The 2017 IPSIG Workshop will be held at Auckland Law School on Friday 5 May 2017. The aim of the workshop is to provide an informal setting for a relatively small group of academics, PhD students, government lawyers, members of civil society and other practitioners of international law working on peace and security matters to discuss work in progress.

IPSIG invites ANZSIL members, as well as staff of DFAT, MFAT and the Attorney-General’s Department, to submit proposals for papers on any topic connected to international peace and security, including:

• the law on the use of force (jus ad bellum);
• collective security under the UN Charter;
• the law of armed conflict (jus in bello);
• the law of peacekeeping;
• security-related aspects of international human rights law;
• critical approaches to peace and security issues;
• international and transnational criminal law; and
• the teaching of peace and security issues in a legal context

In addition to papers on the above topics, IPSIG would particularly welcome papers on questions of disarmament (broadly understood) as 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of New Zealand’s nuclear free legislation and is likely to see the start of nuclear prohibition negotiations at the United Nations. It also marks the 20th anniversary of the Landmines Convention.

Submissions of Proposals

If you are interested in presenting at the workshop, please submit a one-page abstract and a one-page CV by email to anzsil.ipsig@gmail.com by Friday 10 February. Applications will be subject to blind review and applicants will be informed of the outcome of their proposal by mid-February. Successful applicants will be asked to submit a three-page summary of their paper in advance of the workshop.
