Australia and New Zealand are both longstanding supporters of the international rules-based order, but is this order sufficiently resilient to survive both acute and systemic challenges? Since the start of the 2020s, the international order has been challenged by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, geopolitical tension between China and the West, the increasingly visible effects of climate change, the ongoing COVID pandemic, the economic disruptions caused by supply chains in crisis, and the challenges posed by cyberthreats and new technologies, to name just a few.

Is international law, and are international institutions, resilient in the face of these threats? Can international law contribute to supporting the resilience of ecosystems and communities in the face of inexorable environmental degradation? Is international law equipped with the tools to ‘save succeeding generations from the scourge of war’ as the UN Charter’s preamble so solemnly proclaims? Are key UN institutions such as the Security Council and the International Court of Justice still capable of contributing to peace and security and the peaceful resolution of disputes? How are the UN and other international organisations developing resilience in response to changing geopolitical norms? Is resilience supported through domestic processes of incorporation and interpretation of international law? Does resilience require the development of new international rules in areas where none existed previously? Or, does resilience resist change and prevent the creation of flexible and innovative solutions? Where does a resilient international law sit on the continuum between continuity and change? Finally, how can we remain resilient as teachers, students and practitioners of international law?

How to Register

Please use the registration link at the bottom of the menu on the left and follow the prompts to register securely online. You will only be able to submit one registration option at a time (unless registering for guests under the same option). Therefore, if you wish to complete multiple registration types (i.e. Conference rego plus the Conference Dinner) you will need to complete one at a time. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Note for conference speakers: Your place in the program will not be confirmed until you have registered for the conference. We ask you to register or contact us as soon as possible so we can finalise the program.

Conference Program

The Conference Program will be made available in due course and speakers and chairs will be advised as to the length of their panel and their allotted speaking time.

Conference Venue

This year's conference will take place in-person only at Victoria University Law School in central Wellington.

COVID-19

We are aiming to be as COVID safe as possible and will be providing details of preventative measures in due course, including information on mask wearing and air purification systems.

Conference Dinner

The conference dinner will take place at 7pm on Friday 30th June 2023, at the Grand Hall at the New Zealand Parliament hosted by Vanushi Walters MP. The cost of the dinner is 95 AUD per person (including a welcome drink, but otherwise excluding alcohol) and you must register separately for this by submitting a new conference registration. You must register for the dinner by the 16 June. Registrations will not be accepted after the 16 June.

Option 1: Non-Refundable

Cancellations and changes are not permitted to this advance purchase, non-refundable, non-transferrable, non-changeable, non-commissionable booking. A valid credit card is required upon check in. Payment in advance will be required. Payments processed via Mastercard and Visa will incur a 2% transaction fee and American Express and Diners will incur a 4% transaction fee. A 2% fee will be charged on all debit card transactions, when using the credit payment transaction option on a debit card. Cancellations must be received in writing 7 days prior to the arrival date to avoid penalties being incurred. Should a cancellation or amendment take place within 7 days of the arrival date the total accommodation fee shall apply. A valid credit card is required upon check in. Payment in advance will be required 7 days prior to the arrival date. Payments processed via Mastercard and Visa will incur a 2% transaction fee and American Express and Diners will incur a 4% transaction fee. A 2% fee will be charged on all debit card transactions. Registration Cancellation and Refund Policy

A registrant must provide the registration confirmation details (including the email address used to pay via PayPal) when submitting a written cancellation request to anzsil@anu.edu.au.
Cancellation requests cannot be taken over the telephone.
Conference no-shows are ineligible for a refund.
