Conference Program
We look forward to welcoming participants to the 32nd ANZSIL Annual Conference on the theme of International Law: Silence, Forgetting and Remembrance.
The Conference will begin on Wednesday 2 July 2025 at 9AM with a welcome (registration will be open from 8.30AM) and will conclude on Friday 4 July 2025 at 1PM.
We are delighted to advise that our keynote speakers will be Professor Jane McAdam, Scientia Professor of Law at UNSW Sydney and founding director of the Kaldor Centre for international refugee law; and Tembeka Ncukaitobi SC of the Johannesburg Bar, an advocate scholar in constitutional and public international law.
The draft Conference Program will be available shortly. Speakers and chairs should note that unless otherwise advised, the duration of each panel is 90 minutes. Each speaker will have 15 minutes to present to enable time for questions and discussion at the end of each panel.
This year the annual Kirby lecture in International Law (hosted by the Centre for International and Public Law on the evening of Wednesday 2 July 2025) will be delivered by Professor Phoebe Okowa of Queen Mary University and member of the International Law Commission. This is a public lecture that is free of charge to attend. Registration details will be provided shortly.
Conference Venue
This year’s conference will be held in-person only at the Moot Court and Fellows Rd Lecture Theatre Complex at the ANU Law School, 5 Fellows Rd Acton ACT 2600. A campus map highlighting the Moot Court building is available here.
The conference will be catered with vegetarian catering. Please note any dietaries on the registration form.
There are limited public transport options to get to the ANU campus, however it is within easy walking distance of New Acton and the city centre. There is PayStay parking available on campus without a permit: information is available here. Information about disability parking is available here. We suggest that you consider accommodation close to campus.
Conference Dinner
The conference dinner will take place at 7PM on Thursday 3 July 2025 at QT Hotel, 1 London Circuit, Canberra. The cost of the dinner is AUD120.00. You can register for the conference dinner when you click on the various registration options. The dinner catering will be omnivorous: please remember to enter any dietary requirements for the dinner when you register for the conference.
The conference dinner will feature the presentation of the 2025 ANZSIL Publication Prizes and the ever popular ANZSIL international law trivia quiz! We look forward to seeing you there.
ANZSIL International Law Teaching Workshop (Tuesday 1 July)
The ANZSIL International Law Teaching Interest Group is holding a workshop on teaching international law at ANU from 2.15PM to 4.30PM on Tuesday 1 July. The workshop will be an opportunity for ANZSIL members to discuss their role and work as teachers of international law. There is no charge for the event and there will be drinks at the close of the session.
ANZSIL International Human Rights Law Interest Group Workshop (Friday 4 July)
ANZSIL and the International Human Rights Law Interest Group will be hosting a workshop on Friday 4 July 2025 from 1.30PM to 4.30PM following the conclusion of the main ANZSIL conference. The theme for the workshop is ‘Studies in Self-Determination: assessing the state of the field’. Registration for Conference, Dinner, Teaching Workshop and IHRL Workshop
Please use the registration link at the bottom of the menu on the left and follow the prompts to register securely online. Amounts are given in Australian dollars (AUD). You will only be able to submit one registration option at a time (unless registering for guests under the same option). Please remember to enter any dietary restrictions for the conference and dinner on registration.
When you click on each registration option you will be able to register for the conference dinner for an additional AUD120.00 as well as the Teaching Workshop and the IHRL Workshop (both workshops free of charge). Further information about the dinner is provided below.
Note for conference speakers: Your place in the program will not be confirmed until you have registered for the conference. We ask you to register or contact us as soon as possible so that we can finalise the program.

Travel Information
Participants and delegates are responsible for ensuring that they comply with visa and any other requirements for entering Australia. ANZSIL is not able to provide advice to delegates about visas. Information on visas for entering Australia is available on the Department of Home Affairs website.
Registration Cancellation and Refund Policy
A registrant must provide the registration confirmation details (including the email address used to pay via PayPal) when submitting a written cancellation request to anzsil@anu.edu.au.
Cancellation requests cannot be taken over the telephone. Cancellation requests will not be processed after Tuesday 24 June 2025 unless there are extenuating circumstances. Evidence needs to be provided in order for a full cancellation after this date.
Conference no-shows are ineligible for a refund.
