CALL FOR PAPERS AND INVITATION TO
ANZSIL International Economic Law Interest Group Workshop,
25 November 2025, Sydney
+
IEL PhD SEMINAR, 24 November (afternoon)
EoI for AI Regulatory Interoperability Roundtable,
26 November (morning)
The ANZSIL International Economic Law Interest Group (IELIG) was established in 2011 to provide a forum for those interested in international economic law, especially international regulation of trade, investment, intellectual property, and monetary law. The work of the Interest Group covers all areas of international economic law and its implementation in domestic law, embracing both theoretical and practical aspects. The IELIG aims to maintain relevance for government, practitioners and academics alike and encourages discussion and exchange of ideas among all those involved in this field.
2025 Workshop
The 2025 IELIG Workshop will be held in person on Tuesday 25 November 2024 at the Sydney Law School (all day). Its aim is to provide an informal setting for discussion of topical issues and works in progress. Light lunch and a networking dinner will be offered to participants. Registration for speakers is free and supported by ANZSIL and the Sydney Law School.
We are honoured to have Prof. Lorand Bartels MBE delivering the keynote for the workshop. Prof Bartels is Professor of International Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge, where he teaches international law, including WTO law. He is a general editor of the Cambridge International Trade and Economic Law Series, and an editorial board member of several journals, including the Journal of International Economic Law, Journal of World Trade and Legal Issues of Economic Integration. He also helped to establish the Society of International Economic Law.
We invite paper proposals from ANZSIL members, practitioners in the field as well as staff from MFAT, DFAT, and the Attorney-General’s Department. We encourage PhD students and early career practitioners and academics to submit a proposal. Paper proposals may be on any topic within the work of the IELIG. All speakers are invited to submit their paper following the workshop to the Australian Year Book of International Law or the New Zealand Yearbook of International Law for possible publication.
We also invite ANZSIL members and MFAT/DFAT/AGD staff to attend the workshop even if not presenting a paper.
Submission of proposals (Workshop)
If you wish to submit a paper proposal, please fill by 20 September 2025 this form https://forms.office.com/r/Uumk7wp3mG. If you have any problems with the form, you could also send an abstract of 300 words to jbel6800@sydney.edu.au. Please include the heading on your email message ‘ANZSIL Conference IELIG Workshop Proposal: [Your Name]’. Decisions about acceptance will be sent by 25 September. Late submissions would be considered on a rolling basis after 1 October if any slots become available.
Submission of PhD candidate papers (PhD Seminar)
PhD candidates or post-LLM early career academics are invited to state their interest in participating in the IEL PhD Seminar to discuss, and receive input on, their research in a more informal setting. The PhD seminar will take place the afternoon of 24 November. Participants expecting to receive comments from more senior academics are expected to share with the organisers some written text (3,000 to 8,000 words) by 30 October 2025. Please use the same registration form https://forms.office.com/r/Uumk7wp3mG.
EoI for AI Regulatory Interoperability Roundtable
Academics, practitioners and policymakers could also express in the form their interest in participating in an invitation-only roundtable on regulatory Interoperability. To be considered, please explain in the final questions of the form your current or previous work in this space and how you expect to contribute to a broader project in this area. The roundtable follows initial work started in 2024 in this space at the European University Institute (https://www.eui.eu/events?id=574655); it is partially supported by a broader project of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S).
The Call for Papers and additional information is also available here.
Best wishes,
Jose-Miguel Bello Villarino (University of Sydney) and Chris Riffel (University of Canterbury)
